Sharanya Trust is a Ladies forum running an Old age Home in Madurai. Sharanya in Sanskrit means ‘The Refuge’. Sharanya is a Home for Aged Women that was founded in July 1996. Madurai has quite a few old age homes for the well placed, collecting Rs.1000/- or above every month from inmates. Realising the need for a Home for the lower middle class, we joined hands with the Sharanya Trust which was running such a Home ,in a rented building in Thasildar Nagar, Madurai with 12 inmates and unable to increase the number of inmates due to lack of space. They had acquired 20 cents of Land in Karuppayurani, a suburb of Madurai. We, at the Rotary Madurai Metro, undertook to build the first phase of building they had planned to accumulate 50 persons. We initiated work on building, a full fledged Home for Senior Citizens with all required assets and amenities.
The foundation stone was laid by PDG Rtn.Thangaraj Bose on 21st February 1999. The first phase of building, a special care room, a kitchen and a store room of about 1500 sq.ft was constructed and fully furnished at a cost of Rs.8 lakhs. For a few items like Hygienic Block, Furniture, furnishing items cutlery and Television, we availed matching grants from the Rotary Foundation and Rotary International. The Building was declared open on 21st February 2001, presided one and by PDG Rtn.C.Baskar.
The Home accommodates 25 senior Lady Citizens above 65 providing them with hygienic, nutritious, vegetarian food, clothing, medical and recreational facilities. A trained nurse has been appointed as warden and is assisted by necessary staff. A regular medical register of the inmates is maintained with the help of a Doctor who visits them every month.
